Hi, my name is Tayla, I'm 25 years old and I'm currently working as a Plunket Nurse.
I have a 4 year old daughter called Grace and a 1 year old son called Levi. When Grace was born, I immediately knew something wasn't "right". We came home from the hospital and I noticed that she didn't react to loud sounds such as our dogs barking or the vacuum cleaner. She didn't have the newborn hearing screening completed until she was 5 weeks old as it was not done in the hospital and there was unfortunately a wait for appointments.
I remember clear as day, when she was 3 weeks old I sat her in her bouncer and stood behind her and dropped one of my heavy nursing books onto the tile floor. There was no reaction, no blink, no jump, nothing. At that point I knew for certain that my little girl was deaf.
Grace failed the newborn hearing test 2 times, at which point we were referred to the Superclinic to have her diagnosis confirmed. Once it was confirmed that she was indeed profoundly deaf, she was referred to Colin Brown to proceed with Cochlear Implant surgery which was done when she was 8 months old.
It was incredibly hard in the beginning to keep the processors on her head without her pulling them off constantly, which is where the Pilot Caps came in super handy! As she got older and less interested in pulling off the processors we started using the Headbands. The Headbands are also really good for when children of all ages go swimming but want to wear their 'ears' in the waterproof case. We had a few incidence at daycare where Grace would loose her ears on the playground and the teachers couldn't find them! This is when the Clipeze were helpful with preventing the processors from being lost. They're also super cute and customizable!
